Introduction of new shared bikes Schiphol East, Schiphol North, and Amstelveen

In collaboration with Schiphol, KLM is launching a six-month trial on 6th July in which 150 Hely company shared bicycles will be offered free of charge to employees of companies located at Schiphol East and North. In addition, Hely bicycles will soon also be made available in Amstelveen exclusively for KLM employees.

The bikes will replace the earlier FlickBikes and will be parked at the three bus stops at Schiphol East, the bus stop at Schiphol North and at head office in Amstelveen. The trial will be used to collect data on the use of the bikes (how often bikes are used, how many bikes are used, what times the bikes are used most often, etc.). The data collected will provide input for deciding whether the shared bikes will be offered on a permanent basis and under what conditions. Offering these new bikes will make it easier to travel between the various KLM locations at Schiphol East, Schiphol North, and Amstelveen.

New mobility policy

KLM is currently developing a new mobility policy that better fits its vision around sustainability and being a good employer. 'Offer our employees a suitable mobility experience on the planet we care for'. Mobility is also one of the topics being discussed during the collective bargaining process. You will read more about this soon.

Schiphol is also committed to increasing commuting by bike, as it contributes to employee vitality and is a sustainable means of transport. For example, the company is working on good routes and facilities for cyclists to the airport, including express cycle routes, bicycle parking facilities with solar panels and a Bicycle Service Point.

How can you use the shared bikes?

To use the new share bikes, you need to download the free Hely app. You can find it in the Appstore (iOs) and Google Playstore (Android). The app asks for camera and bluetooth permission from the smartphone, which must be accepted before use. After downloading, you need to fill in some data. For example, you need to fill in your KLM email address. Anyone with a KLM email address can access the bikes.

Hely works according to the 'station-based' principle. That means the bikes must always be parked at a hub/station again after finishing a ride. The hubs for KLM are:

Junction North, Canadaweg (East), Junction East, Southern Cross street (East), Zuideinde (East) and KLM Headquarters.

Any KLM person can take the bike anywhere during the ride and lock it. A ride can only be terminated at a pre-arranged hub (one of the six KLM hubs). The bike does not have to return to the original station that started this ride but can be returned to any other station.

After downloading the Hely app and registering, these are the steps you go through when using a bike:

Will the Hely shared bike continue to be available, and will it be extended to other KLM locations such as Schiphol Centre and Schiphol Rijk?

Yes, the Hely bicycles will remain available. In coordination with Schiphol, we are looking at whether expansion is desirable and possible, for the time being this is not in the planning.
